Dr. Disrespect declares Fortnite “overrated” and “soulless”
Dr. Disrespect declares Fortnite "overrated" and "soulless"
Guy “Dr. Disrespect” Beahm has made it clear: he is unhappy with Fortnite. The battle royale star pleaded with the gaming community to move on from the Epic Games shooter.
“Fortnite is the most overrated soulless game in the history of game development,” Dr. Disrespect wrote in
an August 28 tweet.
Those with a pulse on the Fortnite scene will know he’s talking about some unpopular decisions Epic has made of late, particularly those that Season X introduced.
The B.R.U.T.E. mech started it all. Players
immediately sensed it was an overpowered item
that threatened the spirit of competitive skill. The B.R.U.T.E. did its job in leveling the playing field for those who aren’t expert builders, but the power level was so great that one pro could amass
seven kills with it despite his monitor being shut off.
Epic shied away from removing the mech altogether as many had requested, instead trying to meet players at a middle ground by
adjusting its spawn rates
and reducing some of its effectiveness, as well as
adding a counter item in patch 10.20. Many still feel it’s a pain to deal with.
And speaking of those builders the B.R.U.T.E. change targeted, Epic also pushed buttons when
it looked to nerf the turbo building feature
that makes it quicker to place structures in the heat of battle. The change was quickly walked back after a loud chorus of complaints.
Add in structural tweaks for challenges that lessened the time offered to complete them, and it hasn’t been a good few weeks for Fortnite.
Dr. Disrespect’s stance and tone are harsh, but not at all surprising. He has chastised the game before regarding the over-the-top gameplay elements Epic seems to try outdoing with every new season. Dr. Disrespect also historically favors more realistic and competitive shooters.
But
his sentiment is shared
by a growing contingent of both professional and casual players questioning Epic’s ability to steer the ship. Many proposed boycotting Fortnite in favor of alternatives like Apex Legends and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds if the company remained unmoved on the B.R.U.T.E. issue.
Despite the worsening tensions, Fortnite is still in a boom period. The Fortnite World Cup broke attendance and viewership records while paying out the second biggest prize pool in esports history. Today, it remains by far the most-watched game on Twitch.
