Riot has revealed VCT Masters Shanghai as part of the Valorant Champions Tour 2024 season.
For the first time ever, the Valorant Champions Tour is heading to Shanghai, China. According to Leo Faria, the global head of esports, the VCT Masters Shanghai will be to celebrate one year of Valorant being available in China.
“With Chinese teams starting to participate in our global events, including an amazing run in Masters Tokyo, we have seen how amazing and promising the community is in China,” he said. “To show our appreciation […] we are very excited to bring Masters to Shanghai.”
From the start of the Valorant Champions Tour’s inception, Riot aimed to create a global franchise that included talent from all over the world. This initially didn’t include China since the game wasn’t approved by the National Press and Publication Administration until December of 2022.
The colorful shooter had to go through a very rigorous process to be allowed to be played in China, both casually and as an esport. After its approval, Riot attempted to include China in various ways. This included including the region in international tournaments, like having two slots at VCT 2023: LOCK//IN and VCT Masters Tokyo. There will be three teams from China at VCT Champions 2023.
Masters 2024 is Coming to Shanghai!
EDward Gaming actually had a pretty strong showing at VCT Masters Tokyo, finishing in 5th-6th place. It will be interesting to see if the team improves ahead of VCT Masters Shanghai and inspires other Chinese players to jump into the action.
There is currently no information available for VCT Masters Shanghai. It will take place in spring of 2024 but nothing else is known about the exciting addition to VCT. Fans should expect more information in the coming months, including some possible announcements during the VCT Champions 2023 in Los Angeles. This will be taking place from August 6 to 26.
