Overwatch 2 is essentially a replica of its predecessor, except for the absence of the 6v6 format. However, it seems Blizzard may bring that back as well.

In a lengthy Overwatch 2 dev blog post, Aron Keller has explained why the developer decided to remove 5v5 in the first place. While the removal was initially met with criticism, new players have adjusted to the format update. Seasoned Overwatch 2 players, however, are still hung on 6v6, which has led to Blizzard’s decision to bring it back.

According to Aaron Keller, 6v6 in Overwatch 2 is imminent if Blizzard manages to iron out a few kinks.

Can you play 6v6 in Overwatch 2?

Players will be able to play 6v6 in Overwatch 2 after “several seasons.” The format is currently under testing.

“we’re looking at running a series of events to try out different core team composition formats in Overwatch 2. The community has, juuuust once or twice, suggested a test,” Aaron Keller said.

Currently, the Overwatch 2 team composition includes one tank, two DPS, and two support heroes. This restriction significantly reduced queue time, where players had to wait for a tank player to finish their game and start a new one. This is due to the generally low popularity of the tank role. If 6v6 returns, this issue may make a comeback as well.

To fix that, Overwatch 2 plans on running multiple tests in the game, which would eventually lead to the comeback of the 6v6 format. While this should be great news, not all players are thrilled.

Is 5v5 better than 6v6 in Overwatch 2?

Since the addition of 5v5, Overwatch 2 lobbies look more structured and less chaotic. Not to mention, the reduced queue time. But that’s not why players are upset at the potential return of 6v6.

Overwatch 2 players argue that the 5v5 format was the sole distinguishing feature from its predecessor. Now, with Marvel Rivals emerging as a rival, players are threatening to jump ship if Blizzard reverts to the original 6v6 format, preferring the new competitor over a rehashed Overwatch experience.

However, the threats will likely be forgotten once 6v6 makes a return. Blizzard aims to make several other changes to the game to accommodate 6v6, which would once again add a fresh feel to the game. The tests will begin in Season 13.
