GTA 6 teenage hacker deemed unfit to appear in trial
The teenage hacker, Arion Kurtaj, behind the historic GTA 6 leak, has been declared unfit to stand trial, according to a group of psychologists.
In 2022, a massive GTA 6 leak rocked the gaming community, with tons of in-game content surfacing online. The teen hacker had leaked over 90 clips from GTA 6, making it one of the historical events in the gaming industry. As the news broke, a cascade of additional cybercrimes perpetrated by the same individual came to light in the public eye. Turns out, the teenager had messed with big organizations like Uber and NVIDIA.
After a whole year, Arion Kurtaj has been deemed unfit to appear in a trial, according to Reuters. Now, the jury will determine whether the 18-year-old committed the acts alleged rather than deliver a verdict.
GTA 6 leak leads to teenager’s arrest
After the leak went viral, Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar, issued a DMCA takedown to remove the clips from all forums. However, the notice came after the content had already been reposted by thousands of others. Still, the company resorted to taking legal action against Kurtaj, who had also threatened to put the GTA 6 source code on sale if the company didn’t cut him a sizeable deal.
The investigation found out that the 18-year-old isn’t your everyday teenager. Instead, he had been operating in a group called “Lapsus$” and recently started leaking stuff by himself. Just in September, Kurtaj had allegedly targeted Revolut and Uber, causing nearly $3 million of damage to the latter. His partner, who has been kept anonymous, also helped to hack Nvidia Corp.
All of these charges accumulate to up to nine counts, including three counts of blackmail, two counts of fraud, and six charges under the Computer Misuse Act. It remains to be seen how this case unfolds, but for now, Kurtaj has been declared psychology unfit.
