F-Zero 99

The rumors are true: F-Zero is back but the new game is not what anyone expected.

During the Nintendo Direct earlier today, a new F-Zero game was announced: F-Zero 99. It’s a battle royale with retro graphics that has players racing through intense tracks with 98 other racers in hopes of being the last car standing.

This unique spin on a battle royale has racers speeding through tracks while trying to avoid their Power Meter hitting zero. Your Power Meter will decrease every time you hit another pilot or smash into the guard rails, so you’ll need to not only be fast but accurate if you want to survive.

When is F-Zero 99 coming out?

F-Zero 99 is available today. Download it in the Nintendo eShop.

Nintendo insiders hinted that a new F-Zero game was on the way months before the Nintendo Direct aired today. This had many fans hopeful so the battle royale announcement was a bit of a letdown. A lot of fans said that they wanted a “true F-Zero game” to come in the future, hoping that this would “pave the way” for F-Zero to return at least.

“This was the biggest heartbreaker of the Nintendo Direct,” one fan said.

“Fans have been asking for a new F Zero game for the past 20 years and this is what we get,” added another disappointed gamer.

But one comment stated: “Not exactly what i was anticipating out of a new F-Zero game but I’ll take this W anyways. It’s like the Death Race in X but with SNES graphics and online with 99 people! Hopefully we can get a true sequel in the future if this does well.”

The old school graphics and fast-paced gameplay have some Nintendo Switch players excited to try out something different. Hopefully if enough fans show interest Nintendo will feel confident in releasing another F-Zero game in the future.
