Iconic content creator Herschel “Dr Disrespect” Beahm has been under fire since revealing that NFTs were involved in Midnight Society’s first project.

Earlier in the year, Dr Disrespect announced a new gaming studio, Midnight Society. At the time, he explained that Midnight Society would be all about community, allowing fans to have an input and be “completely open” throughout the process. The first project has now been revealed: a Founders Pass NFT.

What is the Midnight Society Founders Pass NFT?

Midnight Society’s website has explained exactly what it means to have a Founders Pass.

Essentially, fans will enter an exclusive echelon of Claws called the Variants. Variants are “active participants” in the development of Midnight Society games, including the “ability to join development decision-making processes.” They will also receive early access to games before they are fully playable.

The Founders Pass also includes a Variant profile picture. These vary in rarity and can also be traded and collected. These profile pictures come with a variety of benefits, including exclusive access to studio events, voting rights on game features, and first dibs on any new merchandise.

Dr Disrespect responds to NFT backlash

In a recent stream, Dr Disrespect decided to discuss the NFTs, defending the studio’s use of the controversial technology.

“Listen, in regards to NFTs, you don’t have to have NFTs to play the game. It doesn’t change your experience of the game once it releases and it will continue to be free-to-play. You can’t buy your way to win,” Dr Disrespect said.

The Two-Time also added that the Founders Pass isn’t a “get rich quick scheme.” It also won’t change any in-game features. Instead, it’s a chance to “own the first piece” of Midnight Society’s digital history. He added that fans don’t have to purchase the NFTs; it’s only for people who want to get involved.

This is unlikely to quell dissent from those upset about the use of NFTs on principle, but it does at least indicate that NFTs shouldn’t be a necessary part of Dr Disrespect’s new venture for fans wanting to get involved.

What is the first Midnight Society game?

While discussing the NFT drama, Dr Disrespect accidentally revealed the name of Midnight Society’s first game. The game is currently being called Project Moon.

So far, there is no further information available about Project Moon. Fans are still left guessing as to the type of game it will be and when it might release.
