A Gears of War movie is coming to Netflix and some big names are involved.

Gears of War is a classic shooter that’s known for its dynamic characters and intense violence. Now fans of the game can expect to see gameplay-inspired action on Netflix thanks to a recently announced film written by Jon Spaihts.

Spaihts is the writer behind Doctor Strange in 2016, Dune in 2021, and the upcoming Dune: Part 2. One of his earlier works includes Prometheus, a science fiction movie released in 2012. Spaihts is no stranger to fantasy and action films so Gears of War seems to fit in his wheelhouse.

“Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates,” Spaihts said in a statement to Variety. “It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”

The last Gears of War game was Gears 5, which came out in 2019 for the Xbox exclusively. The third-person game is often called a favorite, up there with Halo when it comes to Xbox exclusive action. The campaign is fun and full of lore that is perfect for a Netflix movie. Of course, fans are hoping it’s not another Halo mishap.

What is the plot of the Gears of War movie?

Right now, the plot of the Gears of War movie is unknown.

It’s possible it may take elements of Gears 5 but we can’t be too sure right now. Gears 5 was set in Sera and follows Kait Diaz, a member of a human faction called the Outsiders. She is forced to figure out the origins of the Locust Horde that threatened civilizations of Sera a generation before her and unveils her connection to the dead Queen of the Locust, Myrrah.

We do know that Marcus Fenix, a member of the Gears, is in the film. The confirmed character is part of the Coalition of Ordered Governments, which is warring with the Union of Independent Republics. The two forces come together to fight the Locus Horde. Fenix is sucked into an epic journey from there. But it’s unclear how much will be taken from Gears 5 and which other characters from the game will show up.

Gears of War fans have been waiting for this moment for a while. A movie was initially attempted back in 2007 by New Line Cinema. Then Universal Pictures considered an adaptation. Unfortunately, nothing ever came to be. Until now.
