The Aurelion Sol rework release date has been delayed until 2023, according to a Riot Games employee working on the project.

Aurelion Sol is the next champion to receive a major gameplay update in League of Legends. His unusual playstyle has led to a low play rate, so Riot Games is giving him brand-new abilities without touching his iconic character and appearance. The update was originally slated for a late 2022 release date, but recent updates have pushed it back to 2023.

Aurelion Sol rework release date delayed

The rework was announced to be delayed on October 18, 2022 in a Discord message from Riot King Cobra. Aurelion Sol has long been stuck in an awkward position in League of Legends, with previous attempts to modernize his unusual kit failing to make the dragon any less niche. Aurelion Sol’s niche specialty can be chalked up to the unusual movement and play pattern that his constantly-rotating stars create.

While some fans were upset to see the rework being postponed, the community seemed happy that Riot was willing to delay the release of Summoner’s Rift’s resident star dragon in order to make sure his abilities would stick this time. Previous updates to Aurelion Sol’s new kit included the idea of very literally forging stars throughout the game, creating a galaxy of influence from the celestial star god. Two abilities have been previewed that could make the final form, a channeled fire breath and a toggled flight that allows Aurelion to fly over terrain.

Aurelion Sol’s first mid-scope update changed how his stars work, making his expanded radius a temporarily activated state rather than a toggle that drained mana. This was meant to make him feel more straightforwards, with clearer moments of strength. However, it did little to remedy his play rate. Aurelion Sol’s visuals and thematic are a resounding hit with League of Legends fans, but the unusual kit he’s stuck with currently has kept many from sinking time into the serpent.
