Introduced in Season 5, the Champion Mastery system in its original form offered players a way to demonstrate their proficiency through champion points and in-game emotes. However, particularly by one-trick players, there were complaints, calling for a change.

  • League of Legends will update the system in 2024 with a focus on consistency, dedication, and reward with visual presentation. Let’s get right into how the new mastery systems work:

How Does the New Mastery System Work?

First of all, there are no level caps for mastery progression anymore with the upcoming change in Mastery. Players can now go for ever-higher mastery levels, with no set limit to their progression.

  • To accompany this change, Riot is introducing a visually enhanced range of mastery crests and emotes, providing even more options to show off with your champion mastery!
  • The token system to claim a higher tier of mastery is being removed.

“Marks of Mastery” replace S-grade tokens as the core element for leveling up. Earning Marks involves playing games with a specific champion, with high-quality performances. This is where the new split-based reward system comes into play.

The Split-Based Reward System

  • Each split now features a 4-milestone reward track for every champion. To progress, players need to consistently earn high mastery grades (S-, S, or S+) when playing that champion.
  •  Upon completion of each milestone, Marks of Mastery are earned alongside other rewards.
  •  Reaching the final milestone unlocks a prestigious bonus that resets with each split: the ability to display a unique champion-specific title in-game.
  • For those with a wide champion pool, the “Mastery Set” offers a way to earn rewards based on overall dedication.
  • This set, composed of champions of your choice and selections from Riot, resets with each split.

Will Riot Reset My Mastery?

If you’re a player with existing Champion Mastery progress, don’t worry! Riot has confirmed that your progress will transfer to the new system.

  • This means if you’re already at mastery level 7 with a champion, you’ll transfer your progress into the new system. Your existing champion score will grant you a one-time bonus of Marks too!

When Will the New Mastery System Get Added to LoL

  • Unfortunately, developers of League of Legends have little to no comments on the topic and they have said that it will be published in the summer of 2024, here’s what we know about the current mastery system:

Progress for Mastery Level 1-5

  • You must be at least Level 5 to gain mastery.
  • All champions start with Mastery Level 1
  • As you play and gain CP(Champion Points), you achieve new ranks(Up to 5) and gain rewards for those ranks.
  • Players are expected to play 15-30 Games for each Mastery Level.
  • CP is based on your performance, the length of the game, and Win/Loss.
  • Playing with premade increases your CP gains percentage-wise.
  • Players gain CP(Champion Mastery) Every game they play with their champion, the CP they gain depends on the tricks and details that we have listed above.

  • Earning an S- or higher on champions with level 5 mastery will give you Mastery Tokens.
  • After gaining 2 Mastery tokens you can use the champion’s Hextech shard, permanent, or 2450 Blue Essence to unlock Mastery Level 6.
  • Earning an S or higher on champions with level 6 mastery will give you Mastery Tokens.
  • After gaining 3 Mastery tokens you can use the champion’s Hextech shard, permanent, or 2950 Blue Essence to unlock Mastery Level 7.
  • Especially gaining S or higher in League of Legends tends to be challenging for specific champions, so make sure to check out websites that offer to help you gain Mastery Tokens.

Tips and Tricks for High CP Gains

  • Focus on winning your games.
  • Play with premade
  • Pay attention to your KDA
  • Attend to objectives and team fights

Disadvantages of the Current Mastery System

Blog post image
  • After you reach level 7, there are no additional rewards for that specific champion; therefore one trick players often find the system not rewarding at all.
  • Mastery Points after Level 7 are just a statement to scare your enemies in the loading screen, without anything extra to flex with.
  • The system doesn’t reward consistency, after you get 3 S or S+’s with a champion and make it to Level 7, your performance has no impact on your overall mastery.

Conclusion

The changes to League of Legends Champion Mastery are promising for a more engaging and fulfilling experience. From unlimited levels to dynamic ways to showcase your skills, these updates offer something for both one/two tricks and players with a wide champ pool.
