Riot Games has announced that Aurelion Sol will be getting a full kit rework, granting him brand new abilities without changing his aesthetic.

The Champion Roadmap for April 2022 plotted out Riot’s plans for the League of Legends character pool. Summoner’s Rift’s resident god-like star dragon will be getting a new set of abilities in the near future with Riot announcing development of an Aurelion Sol rework.

Aurelion Sol rework doubles down on the dragon

Riot announced that Aurelion Sol would be getting a Comprehensive Gameplay Update, an update that overhauls the mechanical abilities of a champion without touching their visual identity. Aurelion Sol is one of the most popular designs in League of Legends visually, but his unusual kit and unique playstyle mean he’s one of the game’s most niche champions.

This is the first-ever CGU for an existing champion, which opens up a new way to modify aging champions for the League of Legends developer.

Riot notes that many players have tried Aurelion Sol, but most drop him after only a couple of games. This means that the thematic appeal is there, but the mechanical execution isn’t what most people were looking for. Riot compares the scope of the Aurelion Sol rework to the Visual Gameplay Updates for Sion and Urgot. Both of these radically transformed the champion’s playstyle, giving them an entirely new kit with different ultimates.

Riot says it wants to focus on the power fantasy of Aurelion Sol being a cosmic star dragon, with emphasis on the dragon portion. Riot talked about his “star-forging gameplay” and it sounds like the developer already has ideas for how to work within this theme. At the same time, it could mean an entirely new mini-game for Aurelion Sol to expand his galactic network of power by literally forging stars throughout the map.
