After the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, gamers may be getting a movie about The Legend of Zelda.

Iconic entertainment journalist Jeff Sneider has revealed that Nintendo and Universal are close to making an official deal, hoping to have Illumination create an animated movie set in Hyrule. He continued to say that this deal came to be due to the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which has earned over $1 billion since its release.

“I don’t think what I’m about to say is a huge surprise. But I got this tip last week from a great source,” Sneider revealed. “From what I’m told, it’s getting close to official. Universal is closing a ‘big deal’ with Nintendo for The Legend of Zelda. That’s looking like the next big Illumination x Nintendo franchise. We were all expecting but I’m told that is happening.”

According to Sneider, it’s costing Universal a “pretty penny.”

“A lot of people have been clamoring for a Zelda film for quite some time,” said co-host John Rocha. “So if they get this one right, they could turn around this narrative once and for all, that seems to come out every time a film based on a video game comes out. ‘Is this a curse?’ With all these wins and successes the past few years could turn that around.”

Sneider replied that he was not too sure if The Legend of Zelda would be as big of a success as Mario, but there’s no denying that it would be another hit.

The Legend of Zelda creators interested in a movie or TV show

While it’s exciting to get a possible confirmation that a Zelda movie is in the works, it’s not all too surprising. The game’s creators, Eiji Aonuma and Hidemaro Fujibayashi, have expressed interest in the past about seeing a movie or television show take place in Hyrule.

After the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the creators spoke to Polygon about their interest in following the same footsteps.

“I have to say, I am interested. For sure. But it’s not just me being interested in something that makes things happen, unfortunately,” Aonuma said.

When is The Legend of Zelda movie coming?

For now, it’s completely up in the air as to when The Legend of Zelda movie would come out. The first step is to wait and see when the movie is confirmed.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was confirmed in September 2022 and came out in April 2023. Before this, however, the poster was shared to get the gaming community buzzing about the possibility of a film. It will be interesting to see if The Legend of Zelda gets the same treatment if it becomes a reality.
