The Metal Coat is one of several evolution items players can get in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and we can tell you where to find it.

The Metal Coat isn’t particularly difficult to find, but players only have access to one during the course of a normal playthrough. The good news is that players really only need one in order to get the most out of the item. And unlike the Razor Fang and Razor Claw, players can get their hands on a Metal Claw early on in the game.

Where to find Metal Coat in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Players are given a Metal Coat by the gym leader Byron after meeting with him on Iron Island.

Iron Island is accessed by using the Canalave City ferry, found on the western side of the river. Talk with the sailor outside of it to be brought to the island. After arriving, the first building the player encounters to the right of the landing spot has Byron. After talking to him, he will hand over a Metal Coat item.

Use Metal Coat to get Scizor and Steelix in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

The Metal Coat has two uses in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Primary among them is using it to evolve Scyther into Scizor or Onix into Steelix.

Players can proc evolution for both Pokemon by equipping Metal Coat as a Held Item to either Scyther or Onix. From there, trade the Pokemon to another player. The other player will automatically have the Pokemon evolve. Note that it’s best to arrange this manner of trade with a trusted player, as there’s no guarantee that a random player you find online will trade back to you the evolved Pokemon. Worse, there’s only one Metal Coat available on a Pokemon BDSP save, which makes losing it a massive inconvenience.

The other use for Metal Coat is as a general battle item. Metal Coat serves as the steel-type equivalent of Charcoal or Miracle Seed. It gives a 20% boost to the power of the steel-type moves of any Pokemon using it.
