Gen.G has been eliminated from Worlds 2023 after being upset by Bilibili Gaming.

In a surprising turn of events, one of the tournament’s favorites is out of the competition in the quarterfinals. Once again, it is BLG who puts an end to Gen.G’s dreams and knocks the LCK’s number-one seed from the run. These teams met for the first time in a Knockout Stage back in May during MSI 2023. At the time, BLG finished the series with a clean 3-0. At Worlds 2023, Gen.G got a couple of punches for a 3-2 score.

Gen.G continues its trend of disappointing international performances. In the Swiss Stage, Gen.G finished three rounds undefeated and secured a spot in the next round. The early qualification meant the team didn’t compete for almost two weeks. In combination with the reports of internet issues and lack of practice for the teams in Busan, it was a recipe for disaster.

On the other hand, BLG fought its way to the Knockout Stage, playing all five rounds. While the LPL squad might have been affected by the lack of practice, it’s undeniable that having qualified later gave them an edge. Overall, BLG looked more assertive on the Summoner’s Rift.

For two games, it looked like it would be MSI all over again. Gen.G found their footing and secured two consecutive wins but couldn’t complete the reverse sweep. The LCK’s Summer Champion is returning home empty-handed.

BLG advances to the semifinals

Historically, LCK teams do not win when Worlds is hosted in South Korea. The curse seems to be in full force.

BLG is advancing to the semifinals where it will face Weibo Gaming. On the other side of the bracket, it is on the Telecom teams to defend Korea’s honor. KT Rolster is set to face JD Gaming, and T1 will take its chances against LNG Esports.
