Fortnite will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X at launch

Developer Epic Games has made Fortnite available on almost every conceivable platform, and they aren’t going to stop that now.

The publisher announced that the wildly popular battle royale will be available on “next-gen consoles.” Though it did not explicitly name the consoles, odds are that Epic is referring to the upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

“Today we’re excited to confirm that Fortnite will be headed to next-generation consoles at launch. This is the same Fortnite you know and love, ready to take full advantage of the newest consoles. We’ll be sharing more specific details in the coming months as we get closer to launch,” Epic Games said in a statement.

Fortnite took the world by storm in 2018 after the game was changed from a cooperative PVE title to a PVP battle royale. The game took over the genre from competing titles such as H1Z1 and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and eventually became a full-blown pop culture phenomenon. Though many were expecting its popularity to wane over time, Fortnite remains overwhelmingly popular and culturally relevant based on its huge crossover events with both musical artists and companies like Disney.

Part of that popularity has been attributable to the game’s ample availability. Fortnite is free to play, with revenue driven by sales of skins and seasonal battle passes. It is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile devices. This means that almost anyone interested in playing Fortnite can do so.

Fortnite on PS5, Xbox Series X has crossplay, keeps your skins

While Fortnite on the PlayStation 4 had a number of issues when it came to crossplay and accounts carrying over between platforms, that seems to be a thing of the past now.

Epic Games stated that Fortnite on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will allow players to use existing accounts in order to keep all the skins they’ve earned to this point. It will also boast crossplay that will let players keep playing with their friends on other platforms.

Finally, Fortnite’s launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will not be accompanied by a withdrawal from the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Though Epic will likely end its support for the older platforms at some point, they seem committed to maintaining Fortnite on these established platforms for the foreseeable future.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are both set to launch at some point during the 2020 holiday season.
