Overwatch 2 developers have been arguing that the sequel is enough to deserve being its own game instead of a big update to Overwatch 1. To back up this sentiment, more and more information about the highly anticipated FPS has come to light including a new guild system.
The sequel to the team-based arena shooter is being released in early October, which means there are only a few months left until the gaming community gets access to all of the new heroes, maps, game modes, and updates. One of the new Overwatch 2 features will be guilds, something inspired by fan feedback.
Overwatch players have been asking for more community components to the game, allowing fans to interact and engage in-game. So will there actually be a guild system in Overwatch 2?
Developers discuss Overwatch 2 guilds system
Overwatch players have been asking for a clan or guild system for years. When a possible guild update for Overwatch 2 was leaked last year, the Overwatch community was excited but skeptical. Is it finally happening?
One Reddit user asked developers if the team has been working on social systems in-game. In response, an Overwatch 2 developer stated that there will be “more social systems” in Overwatch 2, including a guilds system that’s “near the top of the list” of priorities.
“A feature like this is a great opportunity and something we’re really excited about, but it’s a huge lift, not just for large sections of our team but several other departments at Blizzard. We have put significant work towards this feature, but it’s too early to talk about specifics or when it might come out,” said the developer.
Another social concept that developers are exploring is in-game tournaments. This idea was even less specific than guilds but the team has started to “dig into” this idea.
While fans are excited to hear that there will be social opportunities in Overwatch 2, some voiced frustration with how long it has taken to be worked on. Others wondered how long it would actually take to be added to Overwatch 2 since no date was given.
