The end of the Bayonetta 3 trailer may show a brand new character, a returning favorite, or a shocking crossover.

Bayonetta fans hadn’t heard much about the upcoming third game before a surprise gameplay reveal at a Nintendo Direct in 2021. The sneak peek showed an updated look for Bayonetta herself as well as a bunch of new and seemingly controllable giant monsters.

At the end of the trailer, a mysterious figure appeared that looks entirely new to Bayonetta 3. Who is this new character, and how will they affect the upcoming sequel?

First, it’s important to consider the figure’s outline and glean as many details as possible. The character wields a curved sword with a tassel at the end. It could be a third counterpart to the Angel Slayer and Shuraba. The character also has a short haircut that appears to be white, but that could be the result of the lighting. They wear a leather jacket with spikes on the shoulders, which doesn’t bring any existing character to mind. Lastly, it’s important to note that the character’s gender is not certain. If they are male, they could be related to the Lumen Sages from the first game.

Bayonetta 3 trailer end character might be Jeanne or Dante

With all those factors in mind, the most obvious choice is Jeanne. Bayonetta’s lifelong friend and sidekick didn’t appear in the 2018 teaser or the Nintendo Direct gameplay trailer. Jeanne wears earrings in concept art, but never more than the standard lobe piercing. She would be sporting a very different hairstyle compared to her previous appearances, but the same is true for Bayonetta.

Another popular theory is that the figure at the end will be a crossover with another spectacle fighting star. Fans have stated that the red moon and white hair point to Dante from the Devil May Cry series. It’s possible, but the outline itself points away from the pizza-loving demon slayer. The figure’s appearance doesn’t exactly match up with Dante, but a giant katana and a spiked leather jacket are definitely things he would appreciate.

A more likely case is that the persona at the end of the Bayonetta 3 trailer will be an entirely new character that players haven’t seen before. Based on the opposite color palette from Bayonetta, they could be a friendly rival or a new archenemy. The only way to learn for sure is to wait for the official Bayonetta 3 release date.
