What is Mario Kart X? Here’s all we know

Nintendo may be working on a new Mario Kart game rumored to be called Mario Kart X.

Fans of Mario Kart wondered if they’d get a new game for the Nintendo Switch but instead got Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which was essentially Mario Kart 8 with more content. Then, Nintendo dropped a ton of DLC tracks, which made many gamers wonder if there would ever need to be another Mario Kart after all.

Well, it’s possible.

Mario Kart X uncovered by Nintendo leaker

A trusted Nintendo insider known as Zippo is claiming that a new Mario Kart game is coming — but not for the Nintendo Switch. According to Zippo, Mario Kart X is being worked on for the Nintendo Switch 2.

While Nintendo has been tight-lipped about the new console — even denying that it’s coming — Zippo appeared to have very specific details about the console and its upcoming games. The leaker stated that Mario Kart X would be coming during the holiday season of 2025, the Switch 2’s “second year on the market.”

Mario Kart X is allegedly in development by Nintendo EPD Production Group 9 along with Bandai Namco Studios as a co-developer. These are the two teams that worked together on Mario Kart 8.  

“Additionally, Nintendo are sparring absolutely no expense with this game,” Zippo said. “This is apparently one of the most expensive games Nintendo has ever put into production. The next 3D Mario title is said to be ‘absolutely dropping,’ and this apparently looks even better. The game’s visual fidelity is said to be a very high priority for them, meaning the game is gonna look good, damn good.”

Mario Kart X being expensive to create isn’t too surprising (if true) since Mario Kart 8 has been such a massive success. It has remained the best-selling game on the Switch.

Of course, these are all current rumors. Nintendo has not confirmed the existence of the Nintendo Switch 2 or Mario Kart X. For now, we don’t know if and when the game is going to be announced.
