The Last Of us

Gamers have been curious about The Last of Us television show after the teaser trailer came out in late September. Now, the highly anticipated video game adaptation finally has a release date.

The Last of Us is coming to HBO. Starring video game protagonists Ellie and Joel, the trailer showed a gritty, abandoned town that’s been overrun with mutated monsters and humans trying to survive in a violent, apocalyptic world. Based on the iconic and award-winning gaming franchise, fans were left uncertain how it would pan out as a television drama.

At the time, HBO gave a release date of 2023 but there was no exact date.

The Last of Us TV show release date pegged for January

The Last of Us is coming to HBO sooner than previously anticipated.

The video game-inspired television show will premiere on January 15, 2023. That’s a little over two months away. The release date was revealed by an official social media post on November 2.

While fans of the franchise are still uncertain how to feel about a television adaptation, many are excited at the upcoming series’ launch date. Many shared GIFs showcasing their anticipation and happiness. But others expressed concern with the casting and overall tone of the show.

This started a debate over just how closely The Last of Us should resemble the video game. Some were concerned that the actors wouldn’t portray the beloved characters just right while others felt that the show should have differences from the game.

Previous video game adaptations like Halo and Resident Evil were met with major disappointment. Both were criticized for not being accurate to the games, making them feel like a money grab relying on name recognition. Resident Evil was canceled after one season. The Last of Us remains one of the most critically-acclaimed games of the past decade, so some fans may feel disappointed no matter how good the TV show ends up being.
