Esports tournaments are big and some can even draw the attention of people who don’t even follow the games being played. Not only that but some of these events can bestow the winners millions of dollars for a few days’ work. Here are some of the biggest and most iconic events in esports today.

The Honor of Kings championship doesn’t get its due because it’s a mobile game, but its enormous player base in Asia makes it one of the most fiercely competitive events in esports. Honor of Kings was introduced in 2015, and has really taken off in China. That makes the Honor of Kings Champion Cup one of the biggest worldwide, with tens of millions hoping to land on the stage.

Fortnite is one of the biggest video games in the world and the Fortnite World Cup in 2019 was its coming out party as an esport. The event garnered enormous mainstream attention as Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf won the grand prize of $3 million.

The International is the season-ending event in Dota 2 and its crowd-funded prize pool has made it the envy of the esports world. The first installment of The International came in 2011 with a $1.6 million prize pool but in the years since, its price tag has multiplied dozens of times over. After an issue organizing the event in Stockholm, the location is now changed to Bucharest, Romania with $40 million on the line.

The Evolution Championship has long been North America’s premier fighting game tournament with a history that dates back to the mid-1990s. The tournament has an open format allowing anyone to participate and it has a lineup of games that changes annually.

The biggest game in esports also hosts the biggest event in esports. With around 4 million viewers in 2019, the League of Legends World Championship is a grandiose event. The atmosphere within the arena is what makes it stand out even more and Riot Games has been pulling out all the stops in terms of making this tournament a bona fide event.
