1883 tells the story of the Dutton family
as they flee poverty-ridden Tennessee and join a wagon train. The family settles in Montana, where they establish the Yellowstone ranch.
1923 follows the Dutton family
as they deal with the Great Depression, Prohibition, and Western expansion. Yellowstone takes place in the modern day. The Dutton family has expanded the ranch and must deal with the ongoing conflicts that come with sharing a border with an Indian Reservation.

There are two ways to watch the Yellowstone universe, each alternative has its own pros.
Chronological order
In this order, you would start with 1883, followed by 1923, and finally, Yellowstone. While this is a viable option, it might not be the best.
Release order
This is the “correct” watching order, or at least the one that would make the most sense. Start with Yellowstone (2018), followed by 1883 (2021), and finish off with 1923 (2022).
This order will allow viewers to better appreciate the nuances of the story. Some details are better appreciated when viewers have watched Yellowstone first.
Taylor Sheridan, the creator of the show, shared that it was his intention to add two more prequels. These prequels would take place in the 40s and the 60s.
