Renee Rapp is leaving The Sex Lives of College Girls after season 3, the actress confirmed through social media.
The Sex Lives of College Girls is one HBO Max hit show created by Mindy Kaling. The show follows a group of young women as they start their college journey. The show stars Renee Rapp, Amrit Kaur, Alyah Chanelle Scott, and Pauline Chamalet.
After two seasons, the show will be losing one of its four leads.
“Thank you, Mindy, Justin, and everyone at Max, for believing in me. A lot of queer work gets belittled, but playing Leighton has changed my life,” Rapp wrote in the announcement.
It’s been confirmed that Rapp will have a limited appearance in Season 3 of the show. She will be in some episodes and completely leave the show afterward.
While the actress did not share the exact reasons for her departure, fans have speculated it has to do with her musical career. Rapp is an accomplished singer who started her acting career on Broadway.
Back in June, Rapp announced a tour starting in September that will run through March of 2024 with several international dates. This tour will conflict with any other schedule she might have.
Losing Rapp was not in the showrunner’s plans. According to a report by Page Six, Rapp hired a top attorney to help her finish her contract with the show early. The same report alleged that Rapp announced the tour without getting clearance from the show first. Kaling is still working to get Rapp to stay in the show.
The Sex Lives of College Girls received an early renewal and was ready to start working on its third season. The exact date is unknown yet.
Considering the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, it is impossible to say when will they return to campus.
