Gen-nine Pokemon is coming later this year, with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and their starters being revealed during Pokemon Presents.

Pokemon Presents announced a number of small and medium-sized updates including the arrival of Alolan Pokemon in Pokemon GO, Duraludon’s impending release in Pokemon Unite, and the Daybreak update to Pokemon Legends: Arceus. That would’ve been a decent amount on its own, but the traditional “one last announcement” turned out to be the biggest one by a mile, revealing the next Pokemon generation.

Pokemon Violet and Scarlet were revealed with a dramatic trailer. The game showed Pokemon roaming around in expansive environments, teasing something similar to Pokemon Legends: Arceus without actually confirming it.

Unfortunately, few details were given on the game. Thankfully, Game Freak was kind enough to show off the Pokemon Violet and Scarlet starters to give players something to theorize about.

Here are Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s starters

The gen-nine starters for Pokemon Violet and Scarlet were revealed in a static portrait during the trailer.

The new gen-nine starters for Pokemon Violet and Scarlet are the only new Pokemon that were revealed for the games. Though a variety of Pokemon from past generations were shown, including some relatively obscure ones, other new additions will likely come on a slow drip before the game’s release.

While this might be disappointing, the new starters look to be quite strong after mixed reactions to Pokemon Sword and Shield’s starters. They include a leafy cat Pokemon as the grass-type option, a red dinosaur who is presumably the fire option, and an adorable duckling wearing a hat for the water Pokemon.

Their evolutions weren’t shown, but it’s easy to imagine what could come from them as they level up.

How many new gen-nine Pokemon are in Scarlet and Violet?

It’s unknown how many new Pokemon will be added to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

The new trailer showed off a wide variety of Pokemon in a number of new environments. All of the Pokemon shown in-game are from past generations, ranging from favorites such as Pikachu and Lucario to random ones such as Clawncher and Stonjourner. A definite list of Scarlet and Violet Pokemon will likely come before the game’s release.

Pokemon gen-nine starters names confirmed

The Pokemon Scarlet and Violet starters are named Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly.

The names weren’t included in the actual trailer, but were confirmed later on in official press materials. It is unknown what the new starters will evolve into, but fan theories are abound about what’s to come.
