Mega Evolutions were introduced in the sixth generation with Pokemon X and Y, released in 2013. All the games that followed have some kind of Mega Evolution, including Pokemon Go. In this game, players need Mega Energy to Mega Evolve their Pokemon. Figuring out how to get Mega Energy in Pokemon Go is an important lesson that all Pokemon Go players need to learn.

Pokemon Go added Mega Evolutions in August 2020. A Mega Evolution is a temporary process that increases a Pokemon’s CP. This effect lasts for approximately eight hours of real time. Mega Evolving a Pokemon could change its type. Altaria is one of the Pokemon with the ability to Mega Evolve, and it changes from Dragon and Flying type to Dragon and Fairy type. While the type might change, the HP will remain the same during the Mega Evolution.

Charizard is the only Pokemon with two possible Mega Evolutions. A regular Charizard could evolve into a Mega Charizard X or a Mega Charizard Y.

To reach these Mega Evolutions, first, you need Mega Energy.

How to get Mega Energy?

Mega Energy is similar to the candy used to evolve a Pokemon. You need between 100 and 200 Mega Energy depending on the Pokemon.

There are two ways to earn Mega Energy. The first is by defeating a Mega Evolved Pokemon in a Raid Battle. These are high-level raids that require at least eight players to complete it successfully. The second option is completing research tasks, these are less common. Walking with a Pokemon that has been Mega Evolved has a chance to grant Mega Energy.

Is Mega Energy permanent in Pokemon Go?

Mega Energy is not permanent. Once it is used, it will be gone. However, you only need Mega Energy once, after the first Mega Evolution, it is possible to repeat for free.

Mega Energy is Pokemon exclusive, meaning that it can only be used for specific Pokemon. For example, a research task might grant Gengar Mega Energy, so it can be used with Gengar and no other Pokemon. It is not possible to change Mega Energy from one Pokemon to another.

When should I Mega Evolve Pokemon Go?

The best time to Mega Evolve your Pokemon is before a raid, a battle, or taking over a gym. Mega Evolved Pokemon are stronger, but they’re still not unbeatable. It is important to keep in mind what type is the raid boss and what Pokemon is effective against it. Going into a raid where the boss is a Water type with a Fire-type Mega Evolved is a waste of resources.

A good strategy for the raid battles will have its rewards. Mega Evolved Pokemon boost all the other Pokemon participating in the raid. The bonus doubles if the other Pokemon share the same type.

It’s important to note that you can only Mega Evolve one Pokemon at a time.
