Helldivers 2 players are boycotting after the latest update
The Helldivers 2 community is outraged at Arrowhead implementing a change that has been looming above gamers since the beginning. Now, players have to connect their PlayStation Network account to keep playing the popular co-op game.
Helldivers 2 has been getting a lot of hype over the past few months for its intense alien-fighting co-op gameplay. In the beginning, so many people attempted to play the game that servers broke, but since then, everyone’s been having a great time with the game’s interesting lore and new missions.
But now, some players are claiming they are going to boycott the game due to a new requirement.
Helldivers 2 players angry at PSN requirement
On May 3, 2024, developers announced that Helldivers 2 players are required to link their PSN account to their Steam account or else they’ll be unable to play the game. This is apparently due to a technical issue.
“As of May 6th, all new Helldivers 2 players on Steam will be required to connect their Steam account to a PlayStation Network account. Current players on Steam will start to see the mandatory login from May 30th and will be required to have a linked Steam and PlayStation Network account by June 4th,” the announcement read. “We understand while this may be an inconvenience to some of you, this step will help us to continue to build a community that you are all proud to be a part of.”
Apparently, the PSN requirement is due to the game not allowing crossover unless this is done.
The official announcement explained: “Account linking plays a critical role in protecting our players and upholding the values of safety and security provided on PlayStation and PlayStation Studios games. This is our main way to protect players from griefing and abuse by enabling the banning of players that engage in that type of behavior. It also allows those players that have been banned the right to appeal.”
This may seem easy enough at first, but gamers have decided that developers have taken things too far and they are willing to never play again over this change.
According to some, Sony accounts are not safe to have and easily breached while others are just sick of publishers requiring this type of thing. On top of security concerns, others noted that PSN is region-locked, meaning some gamers from certain countries won’t be able to play the game anymore since they don’t have PSN in their region.
“Sony coming in and stomping all over the devs built up good will is very on brand,” one gamer wrote.
Added another: “Why does every goddamn game nowadays needs an Account or worse a whole new launcher. Just why?”
Even if you don’t have a PlayStation, you will need to make and connect a PSN account if you want to play Helldivers 2 going forward. The accounts must be linked by June 4, 2024.
