G2 Esports breaks the curse and wins IEM Katowice 2023
G2 Esports is the champion of IEM Katowice 2023. The tam secured the victory in an intense series that had fans on the edge of their seats. The best-of-five series finished with a 3-1 score.
G2 is having a season like no other, and it all started with the signing of Australian talent Justin “jks” Savage and the new in-game leader Rasmus “HooXi” Nielsen. These two just added more firepower to the Bosnian cousins Nikola “NiKo” Kovač and Nemanja “huNter-” Kovač, and prodigy Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov.
G2 closed 2022 with a massive victory at BLAST Premier World, where the team took the title. At IEM Katowice, G2 started in the upper bracket of Group A. In that pool, G2 faced BIG, FaZe Clan, and Natus Vincere. G2 ripped through the competition without dropping a single map. This record continued all the way through the semi-finals, and Heroic would prove to be the only team capable of taking a map from G2.
Despite coming into the finals as the underdogs, Heroic put on an excellent performance. The team has been on the rise for some time now. Heroic finished as runners-up at the IEM Rio Major, this is the second final where they failed to take the title. But as our interviews showed, the team is hungrier than ever.
G2 Esports and Heroic battled it out at IEM Katowice 2023
G2 Esports secured the first two maps, earning itself 21 straight map wins and match point for the $1 million event. The clean performance from G2 left little room for Heroic to take anything, and yet the Danish team fought hard to get on the scoreboard.
G2 had its chance to finish off the series on Inferno. Unfortunately, this is when the team decided to gamble and go for some flashy plays. Heroic took the opposite route, playing much more conservatively than it had on Nuke and Mirage. Heroic put one map on the board, which would lead to Ancient as the fourth map. G2 took the first three rounds, but Heroic’s Jakob “Jabbi” Nygaard interrupted the streak with a clutch play. Heroic continued to get rounds, forcing G2 to take a tactical timeout to gather its thoughts.
After the switch, G2 gained momentum, and there was nothing that Heroic could do. One round from victory, only Casper “cadiaN” Møller stood between G2 and its first IEM Katowice trophy. The in-game leader couldn’t stop G2.
NiKo finally broke the curse and got the Katowice trophy that had been eluding him for years.
“I’ve been really patient, I’ve been in many finals, always losing. I guess you just have to believe in yourself and keep working,” NiKo said after the victory.
NiKo praised Heroic and their effort, recognizing that the Danish team really gave them a good fight.
“In the first two rounds, we had opportunities we should’ve capitalized,” cadiaN admitted. “This result shows what kind of mentality they have, they deserve this.”
G2 is growing more comfortable with each other, jks, who took the MVP for the day, admitted in a post-game interview. The team is allowing him to take more risks and giving him more space to go for risky plays.
