Phantom Liberty

The upcoming Cyberpunk DLC will be playable at Summer Games Fest 2023, according to developer CD Projekt Red.

The next major content update to Cyberpunk 2077 will be Phantom Liberty. This will be a whole new story starring the game’s original protagonist, V. The new installment will see actor Idris Elba take up the role of a high-profile star with performance capture in Cyberpunk. Press and content creators will get their first hands-on experiences with the Cyberpunk DLC at Summer Games Fest 2023.

The new Cyberpunk 2077 DLC was announced during the 2022 Game Awards. Named Phantom Liberty, the expansion is teased to follow V as he joins forces with the New United States, or NUSA. Idris Elba’s character, Solomon Reed, will be a central force in the intrigue-filled storyline of the new expansion. Reed is a federal agent of some variety, working for the FIA, assumably the Federal Intelligence Agency. In the trailers, Reed is pitched as the only person V and a mysterious NPC are able to trust in dire times.

The story is being touted as a spy thriller, which is a fairly big leap from Cyberpunk 2077’s main storyline. It should clarify which of Cyberpunk’s many endings is considered the “canon” option. This would be settling a long-held debate about which ending CD Projekt Red would follow up on. V appears to still be in good health, a stark difference from where the game left off.

The cyberpunk action RPG had a rocky launch in 2020, but has since redeemed itself in many players’ eyes with tons of free content and technical improvements. Summer Games Fest will happen in early June, beginning on June 8th, 2023. During this time, press and content creators will get the chance to play a working version of Cyberpunk’s new DLC. Footage and commentary aplenty are sure to follow, with the DLC very much under wraps ahead of this demo.
