A Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is coming, leaks reveal
Internet sleuths believe that a new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game is in development and will be announced soon. The leaks come from data miners that went through the Pokemon Together website’s code.
Pokemon Together is the official name of the 2023 Pokemon Day celebration, taking place on February 27. The website invites players to share their memories about Pokemon using the hashtag #PokemonTogether.
Fans believe that Pokemon will host a surprise Pokemon Presents on February 27. While no official announcements have been made yet, Pokemon Presents have taken place in 2019, 2021, and 2022. These broadcasts are used to announce upcoming games. In 2021, Pokemon Presents announced Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Pokemon Shining Diamond, and Brilliant Pearl. In 2022, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet was officially revealed.
It is too soon for the tenth generation of Pokemon, and an announcement about it is unlikely. However, it would be the perfect time for spin-off titles, like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.
On the website’s code, internet sleuths found “Spike Chunsoft”. This is the name of a Japanese video game developer behind the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series. This upcoming game would be the third part of the surprisingly emotional story.
How many Pokemon Dungeons are there?
The first game developed by Chunsoft was Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team for Game Boy Advance. Spike Chunsoft, the developer, ported the original game for Nintendo Switch, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX.
The series had a total of 11 games. The Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games are an adaptation of Mystery Dungeon games. This is a popular series of roguelike video games in Japan. The premise of the game is simple, a silent protagonist travels across a world, exploring randomly generated dungeons. In these dungeons, the protagonist, who may or may not be accompanied by a team, takes on turn-based battles. Spike Chunsoft has described it as a game similar to chess. The first game in the series is Taloon’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon, released in 1993 by Chunsoft.
Despite having 11 installments, only two pairs of games in the series are original stories. The first pair from the third generation, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team. The second pair of games came out with the fourth generation, titled Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness.
Every game that has come out after those four is an enhanced version of the original games. Same story with added elements, like new Pokemon and dungeons.
What type of game is Pokemon Mystery Dungeon?
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is a roguelike game. Players take the role of a human that has turned into a Pokemon. Along the way, players can befriend other Pokemon and add them to their party, but players only control their own character.
The game has been criticized for technical aspects, like the battle system that, according to some players, feels lacking. At the same time, the series has been praised for the story, which is surprisingly emotional and takes dark turns, completely unexpected for a Pokemon game.
