Why is Henry Cavill leaving The Witcher?

The Witcher Season 3 Volume 2 is the end of Henry Cavill playing Geralt of Rivia, leaving fans gravely disappointed. But why is he leaving the show?

Cavill first started playing the iconic character in 2020 and fans now associate him with the character quite heavily. But last year, it was confirmed that he would be leaving and Liam Hemsworth was taking over. The reason is not confirmed, but there have been some pretty promising rumors.

The first reason is the possibility of him playing Superman. Cavill announced that he’d be playing Superman in the DCEU in 2022 and it’s possible that it could be getting in the way of his role on The Witcher. Many fans threatened to boycott the show but then it was later stated that Cavill was not returning as the Man of Steel after rall.

“After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that,” he wrote at the time.

Even still, he was not going to be on The Witcher. So what gives?

Rumors fly that Henry Cavill had creative differences on The Witcher

Most rumors revolve around Cavill quitting The Witcher due to some ongoing creative disagreements with Lauren Hissrich. This started becoming a prevalent rumor in Season 2. He spoke to Philstar around this time about trying to find the “balance between the showrunners’ vision and my love for the books, and trying to bring that Geralt to the showrunners’ vision.”

Cavill explained that he kept trying to be “faithful” to the source material. It was later rumored that some of the writers didn’t like the books and games and would even “mock” the source material. This includes speculation that director Alik Sakharov left because his vision was different from what the producers had in mind.

Soon after, Cavill announced that he would be leaving the show. Some believed he wouldn’t actually go through with it since he fought so hard to get the role over hundreds of hopefuls.

But Cavill had previously stated that Sakharov was the “best thing” to happen to the series. With him gone, it’s possible that Cavill could no longer be a part of a project he didn’t believe in. If rumors are to be believed, he was most likely fed up with the team not sticking to the source material.
