These are the biggest favorites to win Worlds 2020

The 2020 World Championship is stacked with world-class teams this year, and there are several teams who could potentially make a deep run for the Summoner’s Cup. 

The new Worlds format with four teams from the LPL and LEC makes the competition at Worlds tougher than it has ever been. The LPL teams are looking to win the third trophy in a row, while the LEC teams want to finally take down the Chinese giants. 

The LCK teams have also proven themselves throughout the season, and they finally seem to have rosters that could end up dominating just like in the old days. The LCS teams are underdogs as usual, but shouldn’t be underestimated either. 

This year’s Worlds is one of the most unpredictable ones in League of Legends history, but there are a few teams who are considered the absolute favorites.

Top Esports and JD Gaming continue China’s LoL dominance

The two giants from the LPL have been neck and neck all year, attending both LPL finals and winning one each. Top Esports ended up winning the summer split and is therefore considered the biggest favorite at Worlds by most people. 

Both teams have been placed in groups that they should manage to advance from, even though they will have to perform well to secure the first seed. Top Esports has been placed together with the LCK’s DragonX and LCS’ FlyQuest. The fourth team is still unknown, but many predict that it will be MAD Lions from the LEC. 

JD Gaming is competing against the LCK’s DAMWON Gaming and LEC’s Rogue. JDG will be favored versus Rogue, but DAMWON is considered a strong opponent, so JDG will have to play at their best to top the group. 

Both Chinese teams have shown their individual capabilities while also having great team coordination. JDG especially is known for its impressive team fighting, while Top Esports is often able to dominate through individual play. 

Mid laner Zhuo “knight” Ding is considered the best player in the world by many experts, giving Top Esports an advantage in the mid lane in pretty much all matches they find themselves in. With jungler Hung “Karsa” Hao-Hsuan in the jungle to support him, the duo will look to punish every opponent in the early game. 

The other teams in the tournament will have to bring their absolute best if they want to compete with Top Esports and JDG. These two powerhouses from China may just end up as the two finalists in the end. 

DAMWON Gaming and G2 could end LPL dominance at Worlds

DAMWON Gaming and G2 Esports might be the best bet for teams that could stand a chance against the LPL teams at Worlds this year. Both teams have been the clear best of their regions, especially DAMWON, who was unstoppable throughout the summer split. 

G2 Esports

G2 has had its ups and downs throughout the summer split but finished off strong with a 3-0 victory against Fnatic in the summer final. The team has not made any changes from last year’s Worlds final roster, so everyone knows their true potential. 

Despite having the same roster as last year, G2 has not looked nearly as dominant compared to 2019. The competition in the LEC has increased, resulting in G2 losing to teams that they wouldn’t have previously. At the same time, G2 has not been playing with the same confidence as before, and the meta has not suited them as well as it once did. 

Luckily for the team’s fans, G2 started to pick up the pace during the 2020 LEC Summer Split playoffs. The timing couldn’t be better, but G2 will have to keep its focus if they want to challenge the LPL teams.  

DAMWON Gaming

DAMWON might be the most hyped team going into Worlds. Not necessarily because they are better than everyone else, but because their playstyle is very different from what we usually see in the LCK. 

The team is extremely aggressive and relies a lot on its two solo lanes, which is perfect for the current meta. Mid laner Heo “ShowMaker” Su and top laner Jang “Nuguri” Ha-gwon are never afraid to fight, and with jungler Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu backing them up, the team can run over opponents in record time. 

DAMWON has been thriving in the LCK environment, but it is still unknown how they will match against other aggressive teams such as TES and G2. This team is still young and has only attended one Worlds event prior to this year. 

If DAMWON manages to maintain its individual performances and gets a good read on the meta, then the Koreans will be a force to be reckoned with.
