The release of the Resident Evil 4 Remake is still a ways away, but fans finally have a date to circle on their calendar. Or maybe on their next calendar.

The recent PlayStation State of Play presentation gave fans a first look at the highly anticipated Resident Evil 4 Remake and confirmed an intended release date. Similar to other Resident Evil remakes, 4 will get expanded gameplay and brand-new graphics to accentuate the classic games. Considering the importance of this game to the franchise, Capcom will be hard at work polishing it for the release date.

The planned release date for the Resident Evil 4 Remake is March 24, 2023.

This leaves just over nine months of development time before the game launches. Previous leaks hinted at a 2023 release date, but the newest State of Play surprisingly confirmed a Q1 launch.

After the success of previous Resident Evil remakes, fans expected a new version of RE4 in the near future. The Resident Evil 2 Remake sold more than 9.3 million units in its first year and was a hit with critics as well. The RE3 remake maintains a respectable 79 on Metacritic despite being panned by some fans. Resident Evil 4 is widely considered to be one of the best games ever made, so fans will have high expectations for the latest release.

Will Resident Evil 4 Remake change the gameplay?

Resident Evil 4 fans should expect updated graphics and gameplay in the remake.

The most obvious change is the graphics. The game is being remade from the ground up with very few, if any, assets with the original. Capcom prides itself on its top-notch graphics, so expect locations like the starting rural village and Salazar Castle to look more detailed than ever before.

As for gameplay changes, it’s hard to tell what exactly will be different from the trailer. Many of the changes made to previous remakes made them play more similarly to Resident Evil 4, including the switch to an over-the-shoulder camera.

It’s possible that RE4 could switch to first-person to better align with current titles, but that would be a big risk for such an iconic game. The trailer did confirm that the game will feature virtual reality with PlayStation VR2.

It’s not clear if the entire game is playable in VR or if there will be spinoff content related to the release. Resident Evil 8 is also getting a VR port as DLC to match RE7’s initial VR release. More details on Resident Evil 4 Remake gameplay changes should be revealed before the March 24, 2023 release date.
