The Legend of Zelda producer Eji Aonuma has personally revealed just how Tears of the Kingdom players will get to those mysterious sky islands.
The Legends of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is breaking the third dimension with its plans for soaring gameplay. The open world will feature a massive amount of floating islands, though Nintendo has been tight-lipped on how players will get to them. In the most recent reveal, the developer finally showed off how players will go from the ground to the sky with some exciting new travel options.
The new info was revealed in a March 28, 2023 gameplay demo. The demo starts with a view of a sky island when a mysterious rock starts to fall from it. When Link gets to the boulder, he uses a new power called Recall to rewind its position in time. As Link stands on the boulder, it quickly begins rising back up to the island. Once it gets high enough, Link jumps off the rock and paraglides to the nearest floating landmass.
Previous trailers showed off expansive flight capabilities, including some form of powered flight that will probably unlocked late into the game. However, for new players, using Recall to ride boulders will probably be the easiest option.
The demo ends with Link getting forcefully shoved off a sky island by an enemy. Returning to the surface looks stressful, but Link can always pull out his glider and land safely. The skydiving also gives players a chance to survey the land for new places to explore.
The gameplay demo also showed off some other neat tricks, such as Link fusing a tree branch and a nearby rock to form a makeshift hammer. This new ability will be called Fuse. The ability also works on arrows, allowing Link to freeze foes from afar or create homing shots on the fly. Another new option named Ultrahand will allow Link to combine objects together. The example in the Tears of the Kingdom demo showed how to get across a river located on a sky island.
Creative players will have tons of fun with the systems when The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom releases on May 12, 2023.
