Fans finally have more information on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, now named Tears of the Kingdom, with a release date being officially revealed.

The sequel to Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was announced a long while ago, but details have been scarce since. A few trailers have been revealed, teasing some new abilities and facets to the world. But outside of a few announcements of delays, fans have gotten very little information.

The September 13 Nintendo Direct changed that by revealing a new trailer for the game. While it was a short trailer with just a bit of new gameplay footage, the Breath of the Wild 2 trailer revealed the Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom name alongside a release date for the game.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, Tears of the Kingdom release date

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, now officially named Tears of the Kingdom, will release on May 12, 2023.

No word on why the game was pushed back was given, but it follows a series of delays. Reports ahead of the Nintendo Direct suggested that the game may take a backseat to Nintendo Switch ports of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case as many Zelda fans would’ve been incensed after something similar happened with The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD on the Nintendo Switch.

Alongside the reveal was additional footage that spelled out what fans can expect from the world. Though Breath of the Wild had verticality in the form of mountain-climbing and hang-gliding, the sequel will take that to another level. More details were shown on how Link will be able to travel up to these flying islands, and how to get back down.

There is still relatively little known about the game in this sense, but thankfully fans now have a definite idea of when they’ll be able to return to this dystopian Hyrule.
