The anime series enjoyed critical acclaim when it was released in 2017. It also gained notoriety for its disturbing content and mixed-media animation. A second season was quickly confirmed, but creator Kinema Citrus has been scarce on updates. After the interim movies, season two is finally on its way. The season will pick up right where the movie left off at the entrance to the sixth layer. The main trio of Riko, Reg, and Nanchi stumble upon Ilblu, the village of the Narehate. They meet several creatures who have formed a civilization under the watch of their princess, Faputa. The trailers show the Narehate are animated in 3D while the main characters are done in traditional style.
Is the Made in Abyss movie the canon second season?
The Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul movie is technically the second season of the series.
The movie can be interpreted as season two of the show since it is a canonical part of the story that takes place after the first season, but before the start of the second season. Though many anime movies are skippable, fans of Made in Abyss should watch the film before season two. The original Made in Abyss webcomic continues to update past where the second season will probably end.
In the movie, Riko and company discover the origins of Mitty and Nanachi as the work of disturbed White Whistle scientist Bondrewd. He lives in the abyss performing twisted experiments on human subjects, but Bondrewd also has a paternal relationship with his lab assistant Prushka. The movie focuses on the struggle between the two sides and ends with the gang traveling deeper past the fifth layer.
Is Made in Abyss disturbing?
Made in Abyss has a reputation as a cutesy-looking anime that surprises viewers with disturbing content. This reputation is definitely deserved.
The first half of the first season isn’t too bad, but it does depict a world where human life is significantly less valued. Children are regularly sent into the upper layers of the abyss and often don’t come back. An orphanage functions as the series’ home base for the first few episodes and death is implied to be a normal, acceptable part of venturing into the abyss.
However, the danger in the first few layers is nothing compared to what Riko and Reg find below. If you’re looking to avoid disturbing content, you should know that Made in Abyss contains explicit gore, violence, body horror, medical horror, and depictions of children in extremely stressful situations.
