Overwatch fans could be getting a lore-inspired single-player game

Overwatch fans looking for a story mode may soon be in luck.

In an interview with GameInformer, Blizzard president J. Allen Brack revealed that developers are currently discussing how the Overwatch universe could be used in new titles.

While Brack stated that many of their existing IPs could easily inspire spin-offs, he noted that the Overwatch IP is “extremely large and extremely all-encompassing.” In fact, Brack admitted that the Overwatch game fans are experiencing today is just a very small part of what the IP could be.

“Franchises have the ability to have lots of different types of games, lots of different types of experiences,” Brack said.

Even though it’s still not official if Blizzard will create a single-player game for Overwatch fans, it wouldn’t be the first time the game developers have expanded on existing franchises.

World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth is the newest expansion in the World of Warcraft universe, and the most successful. On the day it was released in 2018, Battle for Azeroth was purchased 3.4 million times. WOW’s previous expansion, Legion, had a launch-day record of 3.3 million day-one copies sold.

Since Blizzard has had success with previous expansions, it wouldn’t be a stretch for them to release another game that takes place in the Overwatch universe.

Fans have been very vocal about their desire for a single-player experience, thanks to Overwatch’s rich lore that’s often underutilized in the current title. While Archives events have offered small story-focused content, that hasn’t satisfied fans who want an actual campaign.

Luckily for Overwatch fans, Brack told GameInformer that they’re currently focused on opening up Overwatch and “finding new directions that they can take the game in.”
