Blizzard is expanding the story and universe around their best-selling first person shooter in the newly announced sequel Overwatch 2.

Blizzcon 2019 closed out its opening ceremony today with the exciting reveal of the future of Overwatch. Overwatch 2 was revealed and will feature a new competitive game mode called “Push,” a heavy focus on PvE content, and a greater concentration on delivering story and narrative content to its players than ever before.

Zero Hour trailer debuts Overwatch 2 at BlizzCon

The cinematic features Winston, Mei, and Tracer traveling to Paris to save the city from the Omic faction “Null Sector.” The trio are eventually joined by other members of the Overwatch cast including Mercy, Reinhardt, Genji, Brigitte, and the newest addition to the team, Echo.

Overwatch 2 will feature PvE missions complete with story cinematics. Players will travel to different corners of the globe to push back the Null Sector invasion.

Overwatch 2 to feature PvE mode hero missions

“Hero missions are focused on highly replayable cooperative experiences,” Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan said.

Kaplan compares hero missions to Diablo’s adventure mode. Four heroes work together and battle against AI opponents to complete their objectives. The mode also features its own independent progression system that allows players to level up heroes and further customize their abilities.

Overwatch PvP returns with Push game mode

The original Overwatch is all about PvP combat, and the sequel won’t be abandoning that concept.

In the new Push game mode, both teams battle to take control of an omnic that begins each game in the middle of the stage. The team that controls the robot will then push it toward the enemy base, and whichever group pushes the robot furthest onto the enemy side wins.

Push will function as Overwatch 2’s core competitive mode and will be played by the Overwatch League. Original Overwatch players will be able to engage with Overwatch 2 players in PvP multiplayer, meaning that playing competitively online won’t require an upgrade to the new version of the game. Original Overwatch players will also receive Overwatch 2’s new heroes and maps.

Achievements and items won in the original Overwatch will carry forward for Overwatch 2 players. This means that all of the original skins, icons, sprays, and emotes will be available to legacy Overwatch players in this sequel.

Overwatch fans now eagerly wait for additional information on Blizzard’s new exciting project, including a release date.
