The Call of Duty franchise is thriving almost two decades later, as the latest Modern Warfare 2 sold over $800 million worth of copies in the first three days of launch.
Since 2003, Call of Duty has remained a staple among shooter game fans. After being the go-to shooter for over two decades, CoD has now entered the big leagues, giving the likes of Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness a run for their money. New stats show that Modern Warfare 2 has broken old and set new records within the first three days of its release.
Modern Warfare 2 was officially released on October 28 and, since then, it has sold over $800 million copies worldwide, breaking records set by its predecessors.
“Thank you, Call of Duty players, for making Modern Warfare II’s launch one for the record books as well as the highest-grossing entertainment opening of the year. It is our honor and privilege to deliver such a historic launch weekend for the best fans in the world,” CoD’s general manager Johanna Faries said.
Modern Warfare 2 also enjoyed the #1 top-selling opening weekend ever in the franchise, beating the $775 million record set by Modern Warfare 3 in 2011. The jaw-dropping figures are big enough to beat gaming giants, but that’s not all. The game’s opening weekend revenue topped box openings of Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
“The blockbuster opening tops any of the biggest worldwide box office openings of 2022, surpassing ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ worldwide box office openings combined,” Activision said in a press release.
The figures are only from the first three days of sales, so it won’t be too surprising if Modern Warfare 2 accumulates a billion dollars in a week. So far, loyal franchise fans have tried and played the game, and the verdict has been favorable. This means that the game is yet to reach to masses who might jump on the hype bandwagon after discovering the record-breaking sale.
