Legendary StarCraft player Geoff “iNcontroL” Robinson’s family posted the cause of his sudden passing to Twitter.
“To offer some solace in this time of grief: We’ve learned that Geoff passed quickly and painlessly from a blood clot in his lungs,” his family shared.Ā
The tweet went on to note that he had been with friends. His family also used the tweet to urge others to always take care of themselves in his honor. This was something that iNcontroL had always told his family to do.Ā
“So sad. Pulmonary embolism is one of the few things that can take even a young, otherwise healthy guy from us in the blink of an eye. Anna said he had a history of deep vein thrombosis, sadly. I hope his family and fans find some solace in at least knowing he didn’t suffer,” a doctor, John Jiao, responded to the tweet.Ā
iNcontroL was only 33 years old.Ā
iNcontroL’s ex-wife Anna Prosser had discussed the pro player and broadcaster’s medical history on Twitter.Ā
āIn 2013, Geoff went to the hospital for pain in his leg and learned it was a blood clot. I remember the doctor explaining to us that usually thereās no pain, and how lucky he was to have caught it. Geoff cited that often, and I never knew someone so steeped in daily gratefulness,” Prosser said.Ā
According to Prosser, iNcontroL had started urging friends and family to “get up, walk, and stretch often” after he learned that extensive sitting could contribute to clotting. He had even had “get up” breaks on his streams to inspire his followers to do the same.Ā
“I just remember how much he hoped that his experience helped others, so I thought maybe heād want you all to have the reminder to be thankful and take care of yourself. Iām going to try to be humbly grateful as he was, and to get up and think of him often. Maybe you will too,” Prosser said.Ā
iNcontroL was a prominent figure in the StarCraft community. After playing the games competitively for years, he became a full-time broadcaster. Blizzard’s official StarCraft page called the news of his passing “heartbreaking,” and noted that he will forever be part of the game’s legacy. Twitch also chimed in, saying iNcontroL’s “passion for gaming, storytelling, and humor will be missed.”Ā
