How to use coins in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
While racing around a track in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, you’ve probably noticed coins. But what does collecting coins do, and how do they work? Here’s everything you need to know about the coins in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
How to use coins in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
The coins you collect are automatically added to your coin count. When you reach a certain amount, a random kart or kart piece will be unlocked. This means once you grab the coin in a race, there’s nothing else you have to do with the coins to unlock anything. It’s all done automatically.
All the uses of coins in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
There are three main uses for coins in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Overall speed
During a race, you can collect up to 10 coins to increase your overall speed. Every coin gives you a better top speed until you max out at 10.

Speed boosts
If you have already collected all 10 coins, you can still get a tiny speed boost for every coin you collect thereafter. While racing, you definitely want to keep grabbing coins whenever possible.
Unlockables
Perhaps the most desired coin use is unlockable karts and kart pieces. Each coin you collect in a race will accumulate in an overall coin count. Every time you collect a certain amount of coins, you’ll unlock new karts and kart parts. If you’re playing with friends in local multiplayer, you’ll collect every coin from each player, helping you unlock things faster.
