Margit’s Shackle gives players a way to cheat their way through the first major Elden Ring boss fight, but that’s not where the item’s usefulness ends.

Margit the Fell Omen serves as a gatekeeper between the player and the first proper dungeon of the game. While most gamers would expect a manageable foe, developer FromSoftware went in the opposite direction by making him one of the most challenging fights in the game. Not only is Margit one of the toughest fights in Elden Ring, but he’s also one of the studio’s most complex bosses with hit confirms and reactions to go along with the standard move combos.

Similar to the Music Box from Bloodborne, FromSoftware hid an item that helps players make it through the first boss of the game. Unlike the Music Box, Margit’s Shackle continues to be a valuable tool for players that get it even after the boss battle. So how do you actually get the item?

Where to get Margit’s Shackle in Elden Ring

Margit’s Shackle can be purchased from Patches the Untethered at any point in the game, so long as he is alive and friendly to the player. The only really tricky part is knowing where Patches is at any given moment.

Players looking for a way past Margit early on won’t have too much trouble tracking him down, though. Patches starts the game in Murkwater Cave, a small area in Limgrave. Players can find it by heading up the river that flows into Agheel Lake, to the northeast of the starting area. Murkwater Cave has a group of highwaymen defending it, though these enemies are not particularly challenging.

The boss of this area is Patches who will surrender to the player after he drops to low health. If the player doesn’t kill him, the fight will end and Patches will become a merchant. Part of Patches’ inventory is Margit’s Shackle, which Elden Ring players can get for 5,000 runes. If the player kills Patches, he drops a bell bearing that can be brought to the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold which unlocks the item for sale there.

How to use Margit’s Shackle

Margit’s Shackle can be equipped as a usable item and used at any time in Elden Ring, similar to the flask. In most cases, Margit’s Shackle does nothing but there are a few instances where it has an impact.

First and foremost, Margit’s Shackle can be used twice during the Margit the Fell Omen and Morgott the Omen King boss fights. If the player uses the item during the boss fight, a rune will appear underneath Margit or Morgott to bind them to the ground for five seconds. This can buy the player time to deal damage or heal up.

Outside of those boss fights there are a few situations where the item is incredibly useful. Margit’s Shackle works as an invisible AOE attack that does no damage, doesn’t impact posture or poise, and is unaffected by obstructions. Despite having no effect against enemies, it still registers as a hit on pillar traps and illusory walls.

This is particularly useful in Auriza Hero’s Grave. The chariot protectors are meant to be destroyed by hitting a pillar trap deep within the dungeon, but Margit’s Shackle lets players hit it through a wall to quickly destroy them.
