G2 Esports could lose Mikyx to injury going into MSI 2019
G2 Esports support Mihael “Mikyx” Mehle could potentially miss out on the Mid-Season Invitational due to a wrist injury.
G2 Esport’s MSI run might not be as great as the team’s fans had expected it to be. The reigning LEC champion is at risk of losing a key player just days before the first international event of the 2019 League of Legends calendar.
Mikyx’s injury was first reported during week nine in the LEC, when the player stepped down to recover in time for playoffs and Hampus “promisq” Abrahamsson took over. On stage, the substitute support failed to have the same impact on the game as Mikyx has become known for.
Mikyx pulled through the injury and played the rest of the season, but that extra effort might have cost him dearly.
“I’ve always really wanted to play MSI and play all other top teams from the other regions, but right now I’m not so sure if that is gonna be possible given that I’m still very much restricted due to the injury,” Mikyx said. “The healing and recovery takes priority, but I’m gonna give it my all nonetheless.”
The team is yet to make a final decision regarding Mikyx and his participation at MSI. Losing its starting support would put G2 in a difficult position considering many of the other top teams at the event are known for the strong bottom lane duos.
In day one of the tournament’s main event stage, G2 is set to face LCK champion SK Telecom T1 and current World Champion and LPL champion Invictus Gaming. These teams have well-rounded squads that can play through any lane, but could also exploit any weakness in the bottom lane if G2 is forced to make a late substitution.
The 2019 Mid-Season Invitational begins on May 1 with the Play-In Stage.
