FaZe Clan Fortnite player Josue “Sway” has been accused of cheating during the Solo Cash Cup event.

Another player using the handle Sour took to Twitter with a clip accusing Sway of teaming up with another player named Wistles during a Solo Cash Cup match on August 28. The clip shows Sway joining in on a fight between Wistles and Sour, helping Wistles eliminate Sour, and then leaving.

Another Twitter user “Numb” shared an additional clip that appears to show Wistles and Sway in a group chat during the competition laughing off the accusations of teaming, with Sway saying “he was just about to kill [Wistles].” The user claims Wistles blocked his account quickly afterward.

After being made aware of the allegations, Sway posted a statement admitting that he had identified and approached Wistles in-game, and chose to not kill him due to their friendship. “I was on a call with friends and after realizing it was Wistles fighting, I chose to leave,” he shared. “I shouldn’t have changed what I was doing because it was a friend.”

What is teaming in Fortnite esports?

Teaming is a practice in battle royale titles where players collude with others outside their party in order to increase their chances of winning.

This can take on different forms based on the game but in Fortnite solo events, it typically involves two or more players helping one another despite the fact that they are supposed to be competing on their own. Though they are not directly playing together, they can help each other in a number of different ways including sharing ammunition or protecting each other from enemy attacks.

The most high-profile example of this came during the qualifiers to the Fortnite World Cup when Damion “XXiF” Cook was fed kills by two friends. XXiF was suspended for two weeks and was stripped of his spot in the World Cup. However, he successfully qualified for the World Cup again a few weeks later.

The skirmish involving Sour, Wistles, and Sway undeniably counts as collusion and stands as a violation of the tournament rules. Rule 8.2 expressly forbids collusion and teaming, stating “players may not work together to deceive or otherwise cheat other players during any match.”

Epic Games has not yet taken any form of action against Sway.
