Did Shrek 5 confirm its release date?

In 2023, every movie fan has the same question in mind, is Shrek 5 still happening? We might have an answer for you.

Shrek is, arguably, one of the most popular movies ever released. It was the fourth highest-grossing film of 2001 with a $491 million box office worldwide. This number doubled for the 2004 sequel. Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After found similar success. Even the spinoffs, based on the adventures of Puss in Boots, are box office successes.

13 years after the premiere of the fourth installment in the saga, fans still want more. Whether they will get it or not that’s a different question.

In 2004, producer Jeffrey Katzenberg revealed that the studio had planned for Shrek to be a five-film project. In 2007, Katzenberg announced that the fifth and final movie would be released in 2013.

DreamWorks Animation later announced that Shrek Forever After would be the last movie in the series. Since then, several rumors have surfaced about the lost fifth Shrek film. In 2016, NBCUniversal acquired DreamWorks Animation and made it clear that it intended to revive certain franchises, including Shrek. A 2019 release date was revealed and confirmed by Eddie Murphy. Another false alarm.

The movie is rumored to still be in development, with the script ever-changing and evolving. If the producers intended to revive the franchise, this would be the time. The 2022 movie Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was not only a box office success, but it also received an Academy Award nomination. Fans are still interested in the series and are ready to show up for it.

Shrek 5 release date

There isn’t an official release date for Shrek 5. The movie is rumored to be in development, but it is unclear at what stage of production the movie truly is.

A 2023 release date is highly unlikely. Considering the success of Puss in Boots, DreamWorks Animation is certainly looking for its next hit, and Shrek 5 might just be it. Realistically, the movie won’t arrive sooner than 2025.
