In 2016, NBCUniversal acquired DreamWorks Animation and made it clear that it intended to revive certain franchises, including Shrek. A 2019 release date was revealed and confirmed by Eddie Murphy. Another false alarm.

The movie is rumored to still be in development, with the script ever-changing and evolving. If the producers intended to revive the franchise, this would be the time.
