Blizzard Entertainment’s FPS game Overwatch 2 is going through a severe decline. Amid all this, the developer has decided to bring it to Steam, one of the widely-used game distribution services.
Overwatch is easily one of the most iconic games in the FPS genre, but the switch to “2” hasn’t been going too well. Blizzard recently admitted that the game’s
player engagement had dropped dramatically, the effects of which can also be realized in the
Overwatch League. The game’s popularity has faded compared to the earlier rendition, prompting Blizzard to take strategic measures.
To make Overwatch 2 accessible to a new, wider audience, Blizzard is taking its flagship FPS to Steam, a platform known for homing some of the best FPS games. According to Blizzard, the aim is to bring Overwatch 2 where the players are.
“One of the ideas pushing us forward is meeting players around the world where they are and making our games as easy as possible to access and play,” the company said.
When is Overwatch 2 coming to Steam?
Overwatch 2 is coming on
Steam
on August 10, Blizzard has confirmed. Its arrival on Steam would be accompanied by Overwatch 2’s biggest update to date: Invasion.
According to Mike Ybarra, president of Blizzard Entertainment, Overwatch 2 will be one of the first Blizzard games to hit Steam. This means more games may follow suit, becoming readily available on Valve’s platform. However, that doesn’t mean that Battle.net will no longer be required. Steam users must still connect their Overwatch 2 with Battle.net to enjoy crossplay and other perks.
Over at Steam, players would be able to benefit from all Steam features, including wish lists, achievements, friend lists, and more. This is a necessary step in a positive direction, and who knows, Steam’s new audience may actually give Overwatch 2 a shot, bringing it back to its former glory.
