Blizzard makes official the OWL finals coming to Philadelphia
Blizzard has officially announced that the Overwatch League Grand Finals will be held in Philadelphia at the Wells Fargo Center on September 29.
The news was previously reported by Rod Breslau of ESPN before being confirmed in an official post on the Overwatch League website.
In its inaugural season, the Overwatch League Grand Finals were first held in Brooklyn, New York over the course of two days. Because of the change in structure required by the double-elimination bracket to be featured this year, the contest will now consist of just one arena day.
This news comes shortly after OWL team Philadelphia Fusion announced that they were building the United States’ first ground up stadium, set for the 2021 season.
Tickets for the finals event will be available for purchase on June 7. Fans can sign up for email notifications to get more information about ticket sales between now and then. The Wells Fargo Center can hold approximately 19,500 fans, very slightly more than last year’s Barclays Center which held 19,000.
OWL Season 2 playoffs will involve 12 of the league’s 20 teams. The two division winners and the next four teams by record regardless of division will automatically qualify to the playoffs, and two additional teams will qualify through a tournament played between the seventh through 12th place teams. Those eight qualified teams will then compete in the double elimination bracket and fight for the two spots available in the Grand Finals.
For viewers at home, the Grand Finals will be streamed on Twitch, and broadcast on television in the United States on ABC network. The television broadcast is further expanding this year to include channels across the world in such markets as Canada, China, France, Germany, and Russia.
Additional details will be made available as the ticket sale date moves closer. Pre-sale availability and match times will be announced at a later date.
