Bjergsen Sets 2018 Summer Split Kill Record
In TSM’s last chance for a guaranteed spot in the summer playoffs, Bjergsen put his team on his back.
TSM’s summer split has had its ups and downs, leading many to think the team would miss playoffs for the first time in the organization’s history. Since an offseason overhaul of its roster, TSM has suffered from a seeming lack of leadership and general cohesion. Despite these problems, TSM put it all on the line versus Team Liquid to maintain their dignity and pride as North America’s dominant organization in League of Legends.
The game started clearly in favor of Liquid. Peter “Doublelift” Peng wracked up an early lead against TSM’s bottom lane with his Tristana. But Soren “Bjergsen” Bjerg refused to let Liquid walk away with the win, and turned the game in TSM’s favor with an Akali that seemed to be everywhere on the map.
Bjergsen and Doublelift clashed throughout the match, each player living up to their role as the star of each respective team, but Bjergsen was unstoppable. The game concluded with a team fight initiated by Team Liquid’s Kim “Olleh” Joo-sung. Despite a solid initiation, Liquid weren’t able to lock down Bjergsen, and the TSM mid laner wiped the entirety of Team Liquid to finish the game with an impressive 14-1 K/D score.
Bjergsen’s 14 kills constituted an individual record in the summer split, and the win against Liquid allowed TSM to secure a spot in the playoffs.
After TSM’s poor performances had become more of an expectation than a surprise, fans’ expectations for Bjergsen and his teammates plummeted. Many pondered a possible substitution, even if only temporarily. But this performance displayed Bjergsen’s continued relevance in the NA LCS. In the last weeks of both the summer and spring splits, Bjergsen demonstrated his brilliance as a player.
