Destroyer2009 may have hacked Apex Legends’ biggest tournament, but he says his intentions weren’t malicious. The mysterious Apex figure pulled off the stunt “for fun.”

During the ALGS NA Regional finals, Genburten and ImperialHal were given hacks, leaving the entire community shocked. The breach, dangerous as it may be, came with a string of memes from the hacker and a clear message taking responsibility for it. Destroyer2009 has now directly accepted that he was behind the hacks if it wasn’t already clear.

In an interview with TechCrunch, Destroyer2009 admitted to hacking two players during a live game of Apex Legends. He claimed to have done so for “fun” and to expose vulnerabilities in the game.

Surprisingly, he is also open to sharing details of the breach, but only after Respawn has patched the game. He said: “I really don’t want to go into the details until everything is fully patched and everything goes back to normal.”

Destroyer2009 hacked ALGS games for fun

Several Apex Legends figures advised the community against playing the game until the developer speaks more about the issue, but it seems Destroyer 2009 didn’t really have a malicious motive. The hacker explained that he included memes in the hack to prevent pro players from being falsely accused of cheating. Throughout the event, it was repeatedly emphasized that pro players had no involvement whatsoever.

“Just imagine if it wasn’t a joke and we didn’t put any memes in the cheat, I’m pretty sure you can ruin someone’s career if they had a cheat pop up on a tournament,” said Destroyer2009.

When asked if he cared about the game and why he didn’t just directly contact Respawn regarding the vulnerability, Destroyer2009 said that reporting has no incentive or reward.

Respawn has deployed the first in a series of updates to protect Apex Legends on March 20, but further updates have yet to be released.
