Sonic Frontiers has continued the modern Sonic the Hedgehog tradition of sparking tons of controversy, but many of the classic elements remain.
Sonic Frontiers is a massive departure for the series in both genre and tone, swapping over from linear levels to a sprawling open world with lots to explore. However, it’s tough to make a Sonic game without including some longstanding features. That includes both classic villain Eggman as well as the return of the Chaos Emeralds. If you’re interested in Sonic Frontiers, here are two of the biggest questions fans have about the newest modern Sonic game.
Is Eggman in Sonic Frontiers?
While Eggman was suspiciously absent from most promotional material, one writer behind the game has independently confirmed his presence.
Sonic Frontiers writer Ian Flynn confirmed that Eggman will return in the modern open-world adventure, but he could play a very different role than fans expect. Flynn said that Eggman’s story will head in an “interesting direction” compared to previous games.
What exactly that means is up in the air, but many fans speculate that Eggman will not serve as the primary villain of the game. The Starfall Islands are a brand new place for the Sonic series and that naturally means new enemies for Sonic to fight. With that in mind, it’s possible that Eggman will serve as the initial villain but ultimately join up with Sonic to fight an even greater threat.
Will the Chaos Emeralds be in Sonic Frontiers?
Unlike previous modern Sonic the Hedgehog games, collecting the Chaos Emerald appears to be the primary story goal in Frontiers.
The upcoming title takes place on the Starfall Islands, an archipelago on Earth consisting of five islands. Based on video game logic, it would make sense to hide one Chaos Emerald on each of Sonic Frontier’s major islands.
It’s also possible that they will gate progression to other islands or grant Sonic new abilities upon collection. Either way, fans will have to wait until the November 8 release date to know for sure.
