The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 has been hit with a delay, but fans still have some new information to chew on.

Early on March 29, the official Nintendo YouTube channel released a short video update on the development of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. This video saw series producer Eiji Aonuma announce that the team has made the decision to extend development into 2023.

When will Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 come out?

Nintendo is now aiming to release The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 in Spring 2023.

Nintendo first announced plans for a Breath of the Wild sequel shortly after the original game’s release in 2022. Very little information has been released since that announcement. BotW2 doesn’t even have a formal name, with official assets referring to it as a “Breath of the Wild sequel.” Luckily, the new delay video did share some details about the game’s development.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is easily one of the most influential games of the past few years. Dozens of AAA video games have incorporated its relaxed approach to the open world into their own systems. Most recently, Horizon: Forbidden West and Elden Ring both take clear inspiration from Nintendo’s open-world masterpiece.

While fans might be disappointed with this delay, it will allow more time for Breath of the Wild 2 to live up to sky-high expectations.

BotW2 delay video shows off new mechanics

While the announcement of Breath of the Wild 2’s delay is disappointing, Aonuma was able to share a sneak peek at some of the game’s developing features. Shortly after breaking the news, the video showed a clip of several skyborne islands detached from one another. The producer was able to explain that Breath of the Wild 2 will take place in the air as well as on the ground.

This provides some extra context to some of the past trailers. The video brought back a past clip that sees Link tunneling through the underside of some rock and popping out the other side. There are likely many other features and abilities set to revolve around this that are not yet revealed.
