Zedd to perform at 2019 Overwatch League Grand Finals event
Zedd to perform at 2019 Overwatch League Grand Finals event
The Overwatch League is looking to redeem itself from last year’s attempt at Grand Finals entertainment by announcing that Anton “Zedd” Zaslavski will be the featured artist this year in Philadelphia.
The announcement was teased on Twitter after Overwatch League posted “Oh, baby” with a musical note emoji. Several Overwatch League talent followed that tweet with Zedd lyrics. People wondered if this was a slick way to announce the entertainment for the event.
A few hours later, the Overwatch League confirmed the news. Fans’ reactions so far have been positive since many in the community know Zedd to be a fan. He has streamed with popular Overwatch League players and has been seen interacting with them through social media.
This will be the second Grand Finals for the Overwatch League that Blizzard has hosted and it seems they have learned from last year when DJ Kahled was ill-received. The entire performance became an inspiration for memes and was not seen in a particularly positive light. The popular mainstream DJ and producer would cut the music to hear his fans sing the lyrics in his songs, only to be met with silence and laughter with a small echo of the melody in the background.
Fans have been happy to hear that an artist who actually knows and cares about Overwatch and the Overwatch League will be represented at the finals this year. A lot of criticism from last year was that fans had the impression that DJ Kahled had no idea exactly where he was performing, evidenced by the famous phrase he uttered in the middle of the show: “Overwatch me!”
Zedd primarily produces and performs electro house music with inspirations from dubstep and classical music. His hits include “The Middle,” “Clarity,” and “Happy Now.” He is currently touring the country and will be heading to Philadelphia after his tour stops in Texas.
The OWL Grand Finals will be held at the Wells Fargo Center on September 29.
