Fast reflexes, practice, focus, and a sharp, strategic mind are all important for professional gaming, but beyond that, every gamer knows that their internet connection also plays an equally important role in stunning victories or humiliating defeats.

In fast-paced games like Street Fighter V, Mortal Kombat, Dirt Rally, and Grid where every millisecond counts, a speedy and reliable internet connection can be the difference between winning and losing. Having an ideal internet plan for gaming not only boosts connection speed, but it can also reduce ping, which will ensure a competitive advantage by allowing you to make winning moves ahead of your opponents.

A faster internet connection is definitely a welcome upgrade, but how fast is fast enough to achieve an ideal gaming experience? To determine a good internet speed for gaming, distinguishing between recommendations and requirements is crucial.

Here’s a comprehensive overview of the factors that affect your internet speed, as well as the minimum requirements and speed recommendations for the PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

Ping, download speed, and upload speed explained

The online gaming experience relies heavily on the bandwidth of your internet connection. Bandwidth is the “capacity” of your internet connection in terms of the amount of data it is capable of sending and receiving at any given time. The standard unit for measuring bandwidth is megabytes-per-second, often abbreviated as MBps.

Also called latency, ping rate shows the amount of time a data packet takes to move from the source to its destination, and back to the source in milliseconds. The source in this case is a game console or PC, while the destination is the game server.

Simply put, the ping rate represents the speed at which an action you perform appears on your screen. For instance, a  of 22ms means that if you are playing Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on PlayStation 4, your character will take 22 milliseconds to fire after you hit the left mouse button.

If your ping rate is higher than that of your opponent, the game server will register your opponent’s moves first. This means that you might get knocked out before you can react. A simple rule of thumb for gamers to follow when it comes to the is:

Minimum Requirements and Recommended Internet Speed for the Top 3 Consoles

PlayStation 4

Minimum Requirements: Download speed of 3 Mbps and upload speed of 1 Mbps,  Below 150 Ms

Recommended Speed: Download speed of 16 Mbps, upload speed of 4 Mbps, under 50 Ms

Microsoft Xbox

Minimum Requirements: Download speed of 3 Mbps, upload speed of 0.5 Mbps and less than 150 Ms

Recommended Speed: Download speed of 15-25 Mbps, upload speed of 4 Mbps, less than 50 Ms

Nintendo Switch

Minimum Requirements: Download speed of 3 Mbps, upload speed of 1 Mbps and Below 150 Ms
